Often local shelters will not accept animals, so there’s a good chance your pet(s) will be with you for the duration of a storm event. Be sure to make plans ahead of time for your four-legged family members.
Help keep your pets safe during storm season by taking care of the following items before bad weather strikes.
Identification:
- Be sure your pet is wearing a collar that includes up-to-date identification tags, including your address and cell phone number.
- Place a copy of your pet’s microchip number (if they have one), along with your important documents, in your hurricane kit.
- Include recent photos of you with your pet in the event you are separated during the storm. Photos showing you with your pet help prove ownership.
Supplies:
- Include non-perishable food, plenty of water, and any medications your pet may need, plus trash bags for clean-up, in your hurricane kit.
- Be sure to have a strong collar and leash, even for well-behaved pets!
- Have a sturdy, portable carrier large enough for your pet to sleep in for traveling or hotel stays.
- Include their favorite toy or blanket in the carrier because pets need comforting too!
- Have non-breakable food and water bowls for traveling.
- Include a litter box and extra kitty litter for cats.
Vaccinations & Records:
- Make sure the rabies tag and county license tag for your pet is current and worn on their collar.
- Request a copy of your pet’s most recent vaccinations and medical records in case your pet needs to be boarded or treated by a different veterinarian.
