Red Flags of Fraud

Contractors trolling neighborhoods looking for victims is rampant in Florida, and it’s highly likely they’re in your neighborhood, too. They'll knock on your door and tell you your roof is damaged and that they can get you a new roof for free. What they don't tell you is your roof is not damaged--it's simply showing signs of normal wear-and-tear.

Oh, and after you sign paperwork to start the roof replacement, an attorney will file a lawsuit against your insurance company and charge thousands of dollars in excessive attorneys’ fees. These tactics have created a crisis for the entire home insurance market in Florida. Fighting fraud and frivolous lawsuits has cost more than $1 billion in losses that you'll never see but will eventually pay for in the form of higher insurance premiums that insurance companies are required to pass along to policyholders.

There's hope. Everyone can do something to help fight fraud. Join the fight in a few easy steps:

  1. Know the red flags of contractor fraud so you don’t become a victim.
  2. Avoid unintentionally committing insurance fraud. Carefully review all work orders and documents to ensure they correctly detail the repairs to be completed.
  3. Don’t be pressured into signing anything you don’t understand or agree with. You could be signing away your rights.
  4. If you suspect insurance fraud, report it to the State's Division of Forensic and Investigative Services at 1-800-378-0445.

Importantly, complete this petition urging legislators to pass House Bill 305 and Senate Bill 76. This legislative reform is critical to reducing fraud and stopping the unlawful solicitation of insurance claims. Share this information and petition with your co-workers, friends, and loved ones--everyone affected by Florida's increasing rates. Every action, every voice, matters.
